Occupational therapy

What is occupational therapy in mental health?

Occupational therapy in mental health aims to provide support to people struggling with mental health issues so that they can regain their well-being and quality of life.

It aims to improve their abilities in daily activities and in all those activities that are important and give meaning to their lives (working, studying, socialising, taking care of themselves).

The occupational therapist will help you develop strategies tailored to your situation. The goal is to gradually restore a satisfactory life balance and promote meaningful social participation.

Areas of intervention in mental health

Occupational therapy offers practical, targeted support in several areas where mental health can affect your functioning.

Return to work

Identify and reduce barriers in the work environment, develop coping skills and strategies (time and demand management), and ensure a healthy and sustainable transition to employment.

Stress and anxiety management

Learn emotional regulation techniques, develop body awareness, and organise your life to regain a sense of control and overcome exhaustion by establishing a healthy life balance, improving concentration, and structuring your activities in a meaningful way.

Neurodivergence

Structure your daily life and routines, manage mental and emotional load, use tools for organising and prioritising tasks, and adapt your environment (sensory, spatial) to your specific needs.

Approaches used

Your mental health occupational therapist uses the following approaches, among others:

  • Occupation-based approach (PEO Model): This is the core of occupational therapy. It aims to assess and optimise the balance between the Person (your abilities), the Environment (physical, social) and the Occupation (your activities) so that you can engage in meaningful activities.

  • Strengths-based approach: This is a cornerstone of our practice. Instead of focusing solely on challenges, we emphasise your internal resources, skills and successes. The aim is to help you identify and use your own strengths to overcome obstacles and strengthen your ability to take action on a daily basis.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): This action-oriented approach helps you understand the link between your thoughts, emotions and behaviour. We use it to change habits and patterns that interfere with your daily functioning.

  • Trauma-informed approach: Recognising the potential impact of traumatic experiences, we work within a framework that promotes a sense of safety, trust and empowerment for the individual, without re-experiencing the trauma.

  • Mindfulness and regulation techniques: We incorporate mindfulness and emotional regulation tools to improve the management of stress, anxiety, pain and fatigue.

  • Motivational approach: We help you identify your goals and strengthen your intrinsic motivation to implement lasting changes, while respecting your stage of readiness.

Our approach is human, respectful of your realities, and focused on your needs.

Initial appointment

The first appointment is devoted to assessing your situation. This process allows your occupational therapist to get to know you better by exploring the different facets of your life, your values, your roles and relationships, as well as the contexts and environments that influence you.

We will pay particular attention to the reasons that led you to seek consultation, as well as your expectations and what you hope to gain from occupational therapy.

Together, we will establish your priorities and goals and discuss a follow-up schedule tailored to your needs..

Follow-up appointments

Follow-up appointments will allow you to put your intervention plan into action and work towards your goals according to your priorities.

Your occupational therapist will guide you with kindness, empathy and without judgement, ensuring that the pace and tools used are tailored to your needs.

The occupational therapist will regularly review your goals with you to adjust them as needed, helping you stay motivated and committed to your journey..

End of occupational therapy

The duration of the follow-up varies from person to person and depends in particular on the issues addressed and the objectives you wish to achieve. When the follow-up comes to an end, we will take the time to review your progress in order to consolidate what you have learned and ensure your long-term independence.

This termination process aims to gently guide you through the end of the follow-up.

It will also be an opportunity to explore any additional resources that may be available..
