Voice harmonization

Voice feminization / masculinization - Speech-language therapist | Montreal

What is voice harmonization?

Voice harmonization is vocal work to develop and appropriate a voice that corresponds to one's gender identity. Among the many facets of vocal harmonization are:

  • vocal feminization;

  • vocal masculinization;

  • development of an androgynous voice;

  • development of several voices to correspond to different gender expressions.

Who can benefit from vocal harmonization?

Vocal harmonization can be used to modify or adjust the voice of gender diverse individuals, including transfeminine, transmasculine and non-binary people.

In the case of vocal feminization, voice therapy can be undertaken alone or in conjunction with voice surgery. Your soeech-language therapist will be able to answer any questions you may have about these two approaches.

In the case of masculinization, voice therapy can be undertaken to induce vocal change without hormone therapy. Voice therapy may also be indicated to help you make your new voice your own, if it seems more limited or is causing you pain or discomfort since the onset of male hormones intake.

Voice harmonization is suitable for teenagers and adults of all ages.

Is it safe to change your voice alone?

Altering your voice without the help of a speech-language therapist can lead to damage to the larynx or vocal cords and/or a voice disorder. It is therefore important to consult a speech-language therapist for vocal harmonization in order to develop your voice safely. The speech-language therapist will offer ongoing support in a climate of trust, respect and non-judgment.

Our approach is trans-affirmative, respectful of your realities and focused on your needs.

First appointment: assessment

It provides an overview of your vocal problematic and its impact on your daily life. The assessment consists of questionnaires, acoustic voice analysis and a conversation with the speech-language therapist. With your consent, your voice will be recorded during specific vocal tasks, providing acoustic data to complement the speech-language therapist's observations.

Following appointments

Following the assessment, the speech-language therapist will provide you with his or her conclusion and recommendations. You can then decide whether you would like to begin voice harmonization training. If so, the objectives of the training will be established together, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled. During these appointments, the speech-language therapist will support you in the development of your voice by helping you to :

  • Identify voice-protective factors and risk factors for voice disorders that are present in your environment;

  • Implement healthy vocal hygiene habits on a daily basis to make the use of your voice safe;

  • Develop your proprioception, listening skills and knowledge of your own voice;

  • Develop a voice that is congruent with your identity, while establishing a safe vocal gesture.

If a voice disorder is suspected, the speech-language therapist may refer you for an ENT appointment (ear, nose and throat doctor).
