Stuttering

Stuttering - Speech-language therapist | Montreal

What is stuttering?

Stuttering is a speech disorder that most often appears in young children, between the ages of 2 and 4, but can also appear later in childhood, in adolescence or adulthood. It can manifest as:

  • prolonged sounds;

  • repetition of words or parts of words;

  • blocking.

Stuttering can lower self-esteem and have a negative impact on quality of life. In children, it can interfere with communication, social and language development. In adults, it can have an impact on both personal and professional life; in the private sphere, it can interfere with social interactions and reduce participation in certain activities, while in the professional sphere, it can interfere with the performance of certain tasks (e.g. telephone calls and interventions at meetings) and reduce well-being, satisfaction and motivation at work.

When should you consult a speech therapist for stuttering?

Although stuttering in young children is transient in the majority of cases, it is recommended to consult a speech therapist after 6 months of stuttering for these reasons:

  • treatments are more effective in reducing stuttering during early childhood;

  • stuttering can have a negative impact on self-esteem and school learning.

Consulting a speech therapist rapidly after the of stuttering will prevent the accumulation of negative speech-related experiences and delay in school learning, as well as increase the chances of restoring fluent speech.

Stuttering in adolescents and adults

For adolescents and adults, speech therapy is based on a mixed approach that aims both to:

  • make speech more fluid;

  • implement strategies for improving quality of life with stuttered speech.

Our approach is human, respectful of your realities, and focused on your needs.

First appointment: speech assessment

It allows to assess the fluidity of your speech and its impact on your daily life. The assessment consists of questionnaires, speech tasks (or games for children) and a conversation with the speech-language therapist. With your consent, your voice will be recorded during specific speech tasks, providing quantitative data to complement the speech-language therapist's observations.

Following appointments

Following the assessment, the speech-language therapist will provide you with his or her conclusion and recommendations. You will then be able to decide whether you would like to begin speech therapy. If you do, the speech-language therapist will work with you to set goals and schedule follow-up meetings. During these meetings, the speech-language therapist will support you in developing more fluent speech and/or in your journey towards acceptance of your stuttering and a better quality of life. In the case of stuttering in young children, the involvement of the parent(s) is an essential factor for success. The speech-language therapist will offer ongoing support in a climate of trust, respect and non-judgment.
