Relationship issues - Psychology | Montreal

What are relationship issues?

Our relationships with others play a vital role in our overall well-being, whether in love, family, friends, community or work. Indeed, it's with others that we flourish, collaborate, share, learn and so on. However, it can sometimes be difficult to establish deep and satisfying relationships with others. For example, we may find ourselves in repetitive relational patterns of conflict, insecurity, avoidance and/or dependency. This can lead to a great deal of suffering and emotional distress, including anger and sadness, as well as depression and anxiety. In fact, these patterns are often not the result of chance; they reflect the way we have learned to relate to others and are rooted in our history, influenced by our first meaningful relationships as children.

How psychotherapy can help restore healthy relationships:

Psychotherapy enables us to:

  • explore these issues in depth;

  • identify the often unconscious mechanisms underlying our interactions;

  • understand how our past experiences influence our present relationships.

Our relational patterns, though automatic, are not immutable: by becoming aware of their origin and impact, we can transform them. By interacting with your psychotherapist, you can observe and understand your own relationship patterns in real time. This awareness, combined with a safe, caring environment, enables you to experiment with new ways of relating. In this way, psychotherapy enables us to build more fulfilling relationships with others in our lives, based on security, authenticity and reciprocity.

Initial appointments: assessing problems and needs

The first few appointments are devoted to assessing your situation. This process enables your therapist to get to know you better by exploring the different facets of your life, your relationships, and the contexts and environments that influence you. We'll pay particular attention to your reasons for seeking help and what you hope to gain from psychotherapy. These discussions will also help determine whether psychotherapy is right for you, and whether a collaborative climate can be established between you and your therapist, based on his or her approach and expertise. In general, this assessment phase is spread over one to three appointments.

In particular, the very first appointment is intended to present the services offered and to discuss the follow-up process (payment, frequency of appointments, etc.). It will also be an opportunity to review together the aspects related to consent and confidentiality.

Follow-up appointments

Follow-up appointments will enable you to put the intervention plan into action and work towards your goals, according to your priorities and at your own pace. All this will be done in a climate of empathy and acceptance of your situation, without judgment and with openness on the part of your therapist. Your therapist will evaluate your goals with you on a regular basis, adjusting them as necessary to keep you motivated and committed to your therapeutic process.

End of therapy

The duration of psychotherapy varies from person to person, depending on the issues addressed and the goals you wish to achieve. At the end of your therapy, we'll take the time to assess your progress. This termination process, which may take several appointments, is designed to support you in bringing your therapy to a close. It will also be an opportunity to explore possible complementary resources or services that could meet your longer-term needs.
