Why consult a speech-language therapist?

Taste and smell are closely linked to pleasure and socialization. A taste or smell disorder can therefore lead to social isolation or anxiety-depressive disorders, as well as disruptions in hygiene and diet, nutritional deficiencies, and have disastrous professional consequences (for people working in the kitchen, or in oenology for example).

Taste or olfactory rehabilitation with a speech-language therapist aims to teach the person consulting how to self-rehabilitate effectively and safely (without the risk of developing additional olfactory disorders), and thus to help them rediscover the pleasure of eating, drinking and smelling.

Olfactory/gustatory therapy is the only approach whose effectiveness is currently supported by scientific research.

When should you consult a speech-language therapist?

It is recommended to consult a speech therapist at the first signs of olfactory or taste disorders because rapid follow-up increases the effectiveness of the therapy.

Our approach is human, respectful of your realities, and focused on your needs.

First appointment: assessment

It allows the speech-language therapist to draw up a profile of your taste and/or olfactory problem and its impact on your daily life. This assessment consists of questionnaires, taste and olfactory tests and a conversation with the speech therapist.

Following appointments

Following the assessment, the speech-language therapist will share his/her conclusion with you. You can then decide whether you would like to begin taste or smell therapy. If so, the follow-up objectives will be established together, based on the taste or smell profile established during the assessment. During these follow-up appointments, the speech-language therapist will support the person in their taste or smell therapy to help them regain better taste/smell and enjoy eating, drinking and smelling. The speech-language therapist will offer ongoing support in a climate of trust, respect and non-judgment.
