What is chronic cough?
Chronic cough is a cough that lasts for eight weeks or more in adults, and four weeks or more in children. Chronic coughs can affect health by interfering with sleep, causing vomiting, or creating irritation in the larynx, which can lead to a voice disorder.
What are the impacts of chronic cough on quality of life?
Beyond the health effects, chronic cough can have impacts on personal and professional life. In the private sphere, it can interfere with social interactions, participation in activities (e.g. singing, attending shows) and reduce self-esteem. In the professional sphere, it can interfere with the performance of certain tasks (e.g. phone calls, meetings) and have a negative impact on well-being, satisfaction and motivation at work.

First appointment: assessment
It allows the speech-language therapist to draw up a portrait of your cough problem and its impact on your daily life and your health. This assessment consists of questionnaires, voice tests and a dialogue with the speech-language therapist.
Following appointments
Following the assessment, the speech-language therapist will share with you his/her conclusion and recommendations. You can then decide whether you would like to begin therapy. If so, the goals of the follow-up appointments will be established together. For chronic cough, two or three follow-up appointments are generally sufficient. The speech-language therapist will provide ongoing support in an atmosphere of trust, respect and non-judgment.
